Affordable & Safe Housing
Housing costs are rising across Indiana, and District 34 is no exception. Renters are paying more, housing options are limited, and too many families are one unexpected expense away from instability. Statewide, Indiana faces a severe shortage of affordable rental housing, especially for working families, seniors, and people with disabilities. This crisis shows up locally as rising rents, fewer available units, and increased housing insecurity. In fact, there are approximately 29 affordable units for every 100 residents in District 34 who need them, and more than 76% of these renters spend over half their income on housing.
Renter Protections Against Eviction
Half of Hoosiers rent, and for too many of them, one missed paycheck or unexpected bill is all it takes to face eviction. And while tenants are held strictly accountable, too many landlords dodge basic repairs and upkeep with no consequences at all.
Sara supports limiting unjust evictions, requiring timely repairs, and expanding emergency rental aid so families can get help before they're already in crisis. Stable housing is the foundation on which everything else rests: steady work, good schools, healthy kids.
Sara believes renters in District 34 deserve dignity and real protections, not just responsibilities without rights.
